Dear Stumped,

Thank you for your question! Jean jackets are a wardrobe classic and therefore many people have them in their closets. One of the reasons they have transformed into a fashion staple is because they are so practical. No matter your style, a jean jacket can work with your entire wardrobe.

Because denim jackets are so classic, you can wear them with things that are more trendy, but still pull the look together without looking too over-the-top. I’ve created a few looks below that use a jean jacket in an unconventional way. I hope you find them helpful and inspirational. And have fun playing with this new purchase on your own!

Outfit #1

Product Information: Jacket, Top, Skirt, Shoes, Earrings, Bag

For this first outfit, I found this adorable yellow mini skirt. I personally love the blue and yellow combination (but maybe I’m just biased because those are my school’s colors) and I think this skirt and denim jacket would go great together. Tropical print has been a hot trend recently, and this top incorporates it well. Finish this fun look off with an orange striped tote, some blue pendant earrings, and loafers.

Outfit #2

Everyone’s seen a jean jacket look done with a pair of conventional pants (either in a contrasting shade of denim like white, or in a fun color or print). But for this look, I thought I’d try a pair of daring harem pants. Many people either love ‘em or hate ‘em, but I personally love them and think they act as good (and cooler) alternative to a traditional pair of pants for the summer. Since these pants draw so much attention on their own, all you need to add is a simple white tank and your jean jacket, of course. Finish the outfit with some black accessories like these glasses, a ring, and some sandals.

A jean jacket also looks good paired with summer dresses — I especially love it with the maxi trend. This maxi dress has a super bold print, but that boldness is balanced by the simple denim jacket. Keep the look simple by adding on some accessories like these tortoiseshell sunglasses, brown sandals, and cross-body bag.

As I mentioned previously, a jean jacket is a nice way to make a trendy look feel a little more classic. For this outfit, I wanted to use the popular neon trend to do this. Pair the tank and jacket with some black high-waisted shorts with a lace detail at the hem. Black flats bring the look together, while printed sunglasses give you that bold, look-at-me feel.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “I’m inspired by street style – If I see something I like, I think of ways I could do it my way to mix it up.”

Where do you like to shop? “Forever 21 and thrift stores are my mainstays.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “A little on the edgy side. I love studs and jewelry is an obsession of mine. The things I wear aren’t what most people would wear every day but when they see it, they often like it too.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “Practical reasons, actually. I put my hair up so people could see the feathers on my shirt, but also because I knew I’d be running around backstage. Shorts, because I knew I would get hot; and high-waisted ones because they are flattering. Flats, because I wore heels the other day, and I knew these would be more comfy.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Buy interesting, bold pieces, and they MUST be flattering and comfortable so that getting dressed in the morning isn’t difficult. That way you can just grab whatever and still look good.”

What are you favorite trends right now? “High-waisted shorts and intense wedges.”

Who are your favorite designers? “One of the student designers, Jennifer Truong, after seeing her corsets at the fashion show!”

What do you like to do for fun? “Fashion shows are fun to do but so is just hanging out with my friends. I need time by myself, as well, to just relax.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “Rihanna, because everything she wears is edgy, sexy, and different.”

As you can see, Alex is sporting the ombre hair trend in a classy ponytail, which suits her style really well. Dangly, statement-making silver earrings add some flash to the look.

I love how Alex’s look combines three spring trends we’ve talked about recently on CF: Digitally printed graphics, leather shorts, and high-waisted shorts. It’s clear that this girl knows her trends! At the same time, she doesn’t look like a fashion victim because all of these trends reflect her edgy sense of style.

3. Cheetah Flats

Animal print shoes are a wardrobe must-have – they pair well with literally everything and are a fun way to add a little extra pizzaz to any look. In addition, printed flats like Alex’s are perfect for staying comfy while running around campus.

Staying stylish on a budget can be hard, especially in College. That’s why DIY Chic is here to show you how to update your wardrobe without breaking the bank with a little do-it-yourself magic. If you are looking for more DIY inspiration, take a look at our past tutorials on making a multi-strand statement necklace, bow hair accessories, flower hair clips, a printed word scarf, transforming a pair of old jeans, recreating an old or thrifted item, or creating a pair of cap-toe flats.

This season, many college gals are swapping out their old jean jackets for a sleeveless alternative: the denim vest. A denim vest looks great thrown over your favorite floral dress, paired with a maxi skirt and tank, or with just about any other spring outfit you have planned. Take a look at this week’s super easy DIY idea on transforming an old denim jacket into your new favorite spring staple.

What you’ll need:

• A denim jacket. Check your local thrift store for cheap options.
• Seam ripper and/or scissors. You can pick up a cheap seam ripper at any fabric store.

The step-by-step process:

1. Start by turning your denim jacket inside out and finding the inner sleeve seams. I would suggest finding a workspace that is well-lit.

2. Using your seam ripper, carefully begin to undo the seam. This might involve pulling apart the zigzagged finishing and then the actual stitching, depending on how your jacket is constructed. Carefully work your way around the entire sleeve.

3. Repeat this same process with the other sleeve. Use your scissors to remove any extra fabric or threads, as needed, to clean up the sleeve.

And there you go! Just a few simple steps to repurposing that old denim jacket you had hanging in the back of your closet or found on the thrift store rack for cheap. This quick idea is a great way to update an old item and add a little edge to your spring and summer wardrobe.

After such a positive response to our post on fashion inspired by Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, we’re back this week, bringing you more ideas for your wardrobe inspired by Walt Disney World’s popular Epcot Center.

One of the larger Disney parks, Epcot is enjoyed by young and old alike with its exciting Future World section, featuring thrilling attractions like Soarin’ and Mission: Space, along with its World Showcase, where you can go “around the world” in just a day. Special events throughout the year like the Flower and Garden festival in the spring and the Food and Wine festival in the fall make this park even more delightful.

While you may not believe it at first, Epcot can be a great source of fashion inspiration, even if you’re not a dedicated Disney fan. Don’t believe me? Below, I’ve created a series of outfits inspired by the park. Scroll down to view them all!

Future World Outfits

Soarin’

Soarin’ is an attraction like no other. Based off the popular ride Soarin’ Over California, from Disney’s California Adventure park, the ride takes you up and above famed California sights – from the beach to orange groves – and plays with your senses along the way!

For an outfit inspired by the ride, wear a pretty sky blue strapless dress with a boho chic lace-back cardigan. A pair of embellished t-strap sandals and daisy stud earrings finish the look that will have you ready to head off into the clouds…or maybe just summer break!
