Gene L asked:

Ok, I’ve got this Sears “Counter Craft” 10-cup drip coffee maker that I’ve had for years and use practically every day….
I’ve noticed it girgles a little more than it used to and takes a lot longer to complete a pot of cafe’.

So what’s a guy to do…it probably needs something like a car does when the radiator gets clogged…some sort of flush or cleaner to clean out the built-up calcium inside….

What to do?
Thanks for any tips.
Ok great…
so far it seems like distilled vinegar is the weapon of choice….
sounds easy enough.

fill half the pot with vinegar and fill the rest with water – run it through like you would coffee – after that just run 2 or 3 pots of water to flush out all the vinegar. That should clear everything up.

(white distilled vinegar – usually found in the aisle with flour, sugar, baking soda, spices)

Just get a new one. After all, they are cheap enough. But if not then just use a whole bottle of CLR. Do not dilute it. Use the whole bottle straight. Let it soak all day. Turn the coffee maker on just long enough to let some of the CLR circulate then shut it off so it can soak some more. Try this about once every hour. This will clean out a lot of junk. Be sure to rinse out your coffee maker really good before you make coffee again. Usually two carafes of clean water should do nicely.
This will work way better then vinegar or anything else.

Mr. Coffee makes a coffee pot cleaner.

Vinegar works well as the other contributor stated.

Run it through 1 cycle using white vinegar, followed by 2 cycles using only water.
This is how I clean mine.
    Hope this helps you.

Baking soda works pretty good, too. Same deal, run it thru its cycle with a couple spoonsful of baking soda in the water, then cycle it with plain water. Just don’t do the vinegar and soda together, unless you like cool reactions and a foamy mess…K ;o)

the best thing to do is once a week run a pot of vinegar water through your coffee maker. and a good way to get stains out of the pot is crushed ice and salt. just fill the pot about half way with crushed ice and pour in a lot of salt and swirl it around. it works great.

p.s. you may want to run a pot of regular water through after you use the vinegar so you don’t have any vinegar residue left.

The best way to clean your coffee pot is to used a mixture of distilled vinegar and water. I would go about 50/50 in the cafafe and then pour it in, let it run half way through and then stop it for about 15 minutes. Let it run the rest of the way through and then repeat the process. After that run a solution of about a half a cup of baking soda and a full pot of water through. Then finsish with one or two pots of just water. We do this once every few months. What causes the problems is mineral build up from the water. This should take care of your problem. Then just do it once every few months or so. It will also help keep your coffee from taking on a bitter taste.

Coffee stains can be removed by wiping with a damp cloth dipped in bicarbonate of soda or borax before rinsing

Take the damn thing out in the garage and blow it out good with compressed air or you can use the hose with a fire hose nozzel attached!
