How much, if anything, should I tip the cleaning woman?

My mother hired a cleaning company to clean for a party she’s having this weekend. I came over to let her in and explain what she needs to do. It occured to me that I should tip her, but my father said they don’t usually allow it. Is he right?
They charge $50 an hour, so what should I tip? 10-20%? She may be here about 3-4 hours at the rate she’s going.

You’d have to ask the company she works for. You could always give her a gift certificate for a restaurant.
teach is right. check with the company. if they allow tipping, 20% is good. if they do not, a small gift would be in order.
It depends if they are working for a company or on their own. If they are working for a company and let’s say the company is charging $15 dollars an hour, they cleaning woman will probably only get 60% of that. So, yes tip her. If she’s working on her own and charging you $10- $12 dollars an hour then she takes home everything tax free. There is no need to tip her.
They are doing their job. On the other hand, if they are doing it exceptionally well, then by all means, tip them. Just put yourself in their place. Usually a job done well, is often rewarded.
